What do I need to know about a kidney ultrasound?
A kidney ultrasound is a test that uses sound waves to make images of your kidneys. Your healthcare provider will look at the shape, size, and position of your kidneys. A kidney ultrasound does not expose you to radiation.
What will I need to do to prepare for a kidney ultrasound?
You will not need to do anything to prepare for your kidney ultrasound unless directed by your healthcare provider.
What will happen during a kidney ultrasound?
Your healthcare provider will ask you to lie on your back. Your provider will put gel on your upper abdomen. Then a device called a transducer will be moved over that area. The transducer uses sound waves to make images of your kidneys. You may be asked to move into other positions so your healthcare provider can get better images.
