Boxed warnings: How worried should you be?

You’ve just received a new medicine. Hopefully, this will help you to feel better or improve your body’s response to a disease. But your doctor mentioned during your consultation that it has a boxed warning….actually, she called it a black box warning, which sounded absolutely terrifying!
Boxed warnings are a special type of warning issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to alert a doctor to a potentially serious side effect of that medicine or to restrictions on the use of that medicine. Boxed warnings must be included on the package insert or any promotional material connected with the medicine including the manufacturer’s website. Not all drugs carry a boxed warning; however, every drug has general warnings and precautions related to its use.
