Cefonicid Breastfeeding Warnings

Cefonicid is excreted into human milk in small amounts. Adverse effects in the nursing infant are unlikely.

In one study, cefonicid 1 gram intramuscularly was administered to 10 lactating women. One hour after injection, the average serum and milk levels were 67.4 and 0.16 mcg per mL, respectively. While this represents a miniscule amount of drug to the nursing infant, and no adverse effects on the nursing infants were observed in this study, data are limited. Whether cefonicid milk levels increase after chronic dosing is not known. Cefonicid is poorly absorbed by the adult human gut, but the extent of absorption by the neonatal gut is not known.
