Grober Mixing Chart For 1 Litre Of Lamb-gro

1. Measure 190g of powder per litre of solution (A scale provides the best precision). 2. Mix with 0.5 litre hot water (60°C) for 3 minutes using a good whisk or a paint mixer. 3. Add 0.4 litre cool water and mix for 1 minute (Total 1 litre). 4. Feed the milk solution at a temperature of 38-40°C (body temperature) (thermometer provides best results).

Colostrum

The newborn lamb should receive 50ml/kg body weight of ewe’s colostrum (first mother’s milk) right after birth and every 6 hours in the first 24 hours. This will help provide protection against future infections. First milking colostrum of mature ewe’s can be kept frozen in ice cubes and slowly thawed when needed. Cow Colostrum (from first milking) or commercial substitutes can be used when the above is not possible.

General Recommendations

- Start feeding milk replacer once newborn has received colostrums.

- The suggested feeding program should be considered as a minimum. Approximately 8 kg of milk replacer will be consumed per lamb.

- Quantities offered should be adjusted to weight, increasing gradually from birth to weaning.

- Any change in the feeding schedule should be done with judgement, according to growth, size and stool consistency.

- Frequent feeding of small amounts decrease chances of digestive upsets.

- Reconstituted Lamb-Gro may be refrigerated up to 24 hours. Discard any unused portion after 24 hours.

- If warmed in microwave only use medium setting and mix thoroughly and regularly. Check temperature before feeding. The high setting could denature the protein.

- The milk replacer solution can be served in a nipple bottle or via a lamb bar.

- Free- choice milk is served at room temperature; do not leave lamb bar empty for more than 2 hours.

- Lambs fed freer-choice milk may consume as much as 20% more milk than the above feeding schedule.

- Teats should be at 40-45cm (16-18ins) above the stall floor.

- Clean ALL feeding utensils and equipment after each feeding: rinse in lukewarm water, wash with a detergent in hot water, rinse with clean water (ideally a 5-10% bleach solution once a day) and dry thoroughly with a ‘clean’ towel.

Starter Ration, Water, Forage And Weaning

- Introduce a quality lamb creep ration (17-20% CP) from 4 days of age: offer small quantities twice daily.

- Offer good quality roughage at 2 weeks of age. Do not feed silage before 6 weeks of age.

- Fresh, clean water should be always available, particularly when consuming a significant amount of solids.

- When the lamb is consuming a minimum of 120-150g of creep ration per day for more than 2 consecutive days, the weaning process can be initiated. Suggested weaning weight is about 12kg. Consult your local feed dealer for feed recommendations.
